Remote Work + Travel

When COVID-19 hit and we all shifted from in person to remote work, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that thought: “If I can work from home…can’t I work away from home?” Here are some tips and product suggestions that keep me comfortable and productive for those days that I’m working from home (away from home)!

Things to consider:

  • IS THERE WIFI?
  • Is there decent WiFi that I can comfortably work with?
  • Will I be able to focus at my planned destination? Be sure to consider your workspace/ environment.
  • Set ground rules especially if you’ll be sharing a space with others (like family or friends).
  • If you’re traveling to a different timezone, make sure you know what your working hours are.
  • Understand that if your traveling + working remote, it is not a vacation. Work will still be work no matter where you go. It’s taking advantage of the hours before/after work that matter.

On the go essentials:

  • Portable monitor
    • If you’re anything like me and got used to the spoiled office set up of 3 monitors (or 2 monitors for my home set up), then I would highly suggest investing in a portable monitor. Especially if you know you’ll have enough space to set this up. Use a privacy screen if your line of work calls for one.
    • AOC portable monitor – this is part of my personal set up, but honestly I wish I did more research prior to my purchase because this monitor does not come with speakers
    • Other good options:
  • Wireless keyboard
    • Overall, I do my best to maintain an ergonomic set up wherever I go. Using an external keyboard is more comfortable due to it being flexible location-wise, and you can keep your monitor a healthy arms length distance away from your face. Keep them eyes healthy!
    • Logitech K380 Bluetooth Keyboard
  • Wireless mouse
  • Headphones/earphones/airpods/whatever you prefer
    • Specifically, the noise cancelling type if you get easily distracted like me! Sometimes I like to work at cafes or maybe even my sister’s living room in Texas and the background noise is just not it. 10/10 would rather listen to Lo-Fi house instead of my noisy surroundings or worse— my own thoughts.
    • I just use my good ole pair of airpods.
  • Tote bag
    • Make it a cute one. If you’re going to be lugging around all these stuff (honestly they don’t even take up that much space but still) you might as well look good doing it.
